Greater Orlando Chapter 73
About Us

History

The Greater Orlando Chapter was chartered in 1962 as the Orlando/Winter Park Chapter and is a part of Region 3, the only Region encompassing an entire state! During the past 10 years, this Chapter has grown to having over 135 members from Orange, Seminole, Lake, Osceola and Brevard Counties. The name change to Greater Orlando was to encompass our far-reaching members. The Greater Orlando Chapter is one of the largest chapter in the nation and is definitely a very active chapter!

The National Association of Women In Construction (NAWIC) originally began as Women In Construction of Fort Worth. It was founded in 1953 by 16 women working in the construction industry. Knowing that women represented only a small fraction of the construction industry, the founders organized NAWIC to create a support network. Women in Construction of Fort Worth was so successful that it gained its national charter in 1955 and became the National Association of Women In Construction.

NAWIC has a membership of 6,200 with close to 200 chapters in 49 U.S. states and in three Canadian provinces. Since 1996, NAWIC has seen its mission grown transcontinentally, with the signing of International Affiliation agreements with NAWIC-Australia, NAWIC-New Zealand, South African Women In Construction (SAWiC) and most recently with NAWIC-United Kingdom . In its 46 years of service to its membership, NAWIC has advanced the causes of all women in construction whose careers range from the skilled trades to business ownership.

Region 3, which encompasses the entire state of Florida, currently has 14 chapters from Pensacola to Miami. We are the only region that is comprised of one state making us unique among the national regions.

Leadership

NAWIC is governed by a 20-person Board of Directors. The association is divided into 14 geographical regions and each region elects a director to serve as its regional representative for a two-year term. The 14 regional directors serve along with the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and immediate past president. The Board of Directors holds a Mid-Year Board Meeting in the spring and also an Annual Meeting at convention in the fall to conduct association business.
